Linus
Pauling (1901 - 1994)
American physical chemist Linus Pauling
(1901 - 1994) is noted for his discovery of the alpha-helix
structure of protein (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1954)
and advocacy of world peace (Nobel Peace Prize, 1962). He is
one one of a handful of "double-Nobel" scientists. His
advocacy of nuclear disarmament led to the lifting of his
passport in the 1960s, on the way to an international
science conference. His later advocacy of mega-doses of
Vitamin C as a cure for the Common Cold was controversial.
